BlackBerry Developer Success Story - Expertech Network Installation Inc.

As a Canadian telecom and network infrastructure service provider for the wireline and wireless broadband technology market, Expertech Network Installation Inc. (Expertech) needed a reliable and cost effective way to track its technicians at potentially dangerous work sites across Ontario and Quebec. Having long used BlackBerry® smartphones for other enterprise applications, it was an easy decision for Bobby Gibbons, Manager of IT Development at Expertech, to use Java-based tools to develop a location-based BlackBerry app that helps keep technicians safe.

Gibbons spoke to us about the simplicity of using RIM's development tools and APIs and why the RIM CDP has been integral to the app's success.

Q: Why did you decide to develop with the BlackBerry Java Plug-In for Eclipse?

We had previous knowledge in Java and it made sense for us to build specific applications that way. From the very beginning, everything has been very straight forward. From the installation and configuration of the BlackBerry Java Plug-In for Eclipse to the time we started simulation, we haven't experienced any difficulties.

Q: What APIs did you use for this application?

Location-based APIs are a major component of the application. At specific intervals we obtain coordinates and post them back to an internal database server. This allows us to determine a technician's location when needed during an escalation process or emergency situation.

The BlackBerry APIs offer a lot of potential for what you can do with the devices and with RIM's support and the amount of documentation and resources available online, using the toolkits is a straightforward process.

Q: How significant has RIM's support been?

Participating in the RIM CDP has been instrumental to the success of this and other applications we've developed and deployed. I've dealt with RIM's Enterprise Solution Consultants and they've always been available to provide technical advice and guidance throughout the development process. When you combine this level of support with the quality of the device itself, we remain committed to the BlackBerry solution.
