Company Background

BachKhoa Software is a company known for its extensive work in creating innovative mobile applications for various mobile platforms. Based in Vietnam, the company has produced over 26 applications that are currently running on BlackBerry® World™, BlackBerry's storefront where users can download and purchase apps, themes and games for their BlackBerry® devices.

Led by company founder, Nguyen Long, the company has also developed four applications exclusively for BlackBerry® 10, all of which have received Built for BlackBerry® (BFB) Certification.

The Challenge

In 2011, the global technology space was presented with the idea of a mobile application that was rumoured to have the power to perform capabilities similar to a personal assistant's. It was not long until mobile users across brands and platforms demanded for the technology to be made available in their own personal and work devices.

Having previously enjoyed developing numerous applications on the BlackBerry® platform, Long decided to create an application that would fill the need and address the demand of BlackBerry® users around the world.

The Solution

Long was still a student enrolled at Bach Khoa University in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City when he decided to develop the application for the BlackBerry 10 platform.

SayIt, one of the four BFB applications, is an automated voice recognition application that has the ability to carry out personal assistant duties, and perform multilingual voice dictation and text to voice conversion tasks.

Released in January 2013, SayIt received a significant amount of positive feedback from users around the world. It answered the need for a voice recognition assistant created exclusively for all BlackBerry® smartphones, including the recently launched BlackBerry 10 devices. Users were very pleased to be able to use the application as it synced well with other trusted productivity tools on their BlackBerry® smartphones, while all being kept secure by BlackBerry's premium security platform.

"We can't believe that this success comes from a young platform like BlackBerry 10. That's incredible!" - Nguyen Long, Founder, BachKhoa Software.

BachKhoa Software has reaped many benefits and rewards from the release of SayIt. The company receives an average of 3,000 monthly downloads at the price of $3.99 per purchase.

The company has also received worldwide recognition, having garnered popularity in large mobile consumer spaces such as Canada, USA, UK and Indonesia. The SayIt application has also been widely covered in online platforms such as CrackBerry and N4BB, and crowned BachKhoa Software the First Winner of the Vietnam BlackBerry® App Challenge in 2012. The app was also included in the list of Top 10 Paid Apps for BlackBerry® just a week after it was released.

Learning how to develop applications for BlackBerry® came easy for Long as he was able to leverage his past extensive experience with the Java platform by using the BlackBerry® Java Plug-in for Eclipse. He appreciated the easy access to downloadable content on BlackBerry's developer website and the large variety of useful Java APIs that enabled him to create applications at a reduced amount of time, compared to when he developed applications for other mobile platforms.

Furthermore, as SayIt is a BFB app, Long experienced an increase of 200% in download numbers and revenue compared to apps that were not BFB-certified. He credits this to BlackBerry's 'very profitable program for developers' as BFB apps obtain a high profile on BlackBerry® World™ via the Built for BlackBerry® section.

It was therefore not surprising that Long says he felt the BlackBerry® platform was most suited for the development of SayIt. BlackBerry® users, he adds, are also more willing to purchase apps that meet their needs and demands compared to users of other mobile platforms.

"We are very excited with this success," said Long. "We can't believe that this success comes from a young platform like BlackBerry 10. That's incredible!"
