Configure networking for the tablet or simulator

Depending on whether you want to use the simulator or the tablet, you need to configure the device to be able to communicate with your host computer. For development, you need to connect your device over the network. You can connect a tablet using two methods: using WI-FI or through the USB cable.

If you use both methods (Wi-Fi and USB) to connect the tablet at the same time, it will have two IP addresses assigned.

To connect using USB:

  1. Connect your host computer to the device using a USB cable.
  2. On your host computer, you'll be prompted by the BlackBerry Device Manager installer to install the appropriate drivers on the device.

Now, an IP address will be available each time the device starts.

For USB connections on Linux systems, click the Settings icon, then select Storage & Sharing, and in the USB Connections section, select Connect to Windows.

To enable Development Mode if it is not currently set:

  1. Connect to the device.
  2. Click the Settings icon.

    The Settings icon.

  3. Select Security in the left navigator.
  4. Select Development Mode from the list of security options.
  5. Next to the Use Development Mode label, set the Development Mode setting to ON.
  6. When prompted, type the password for your device, and click OK.
  7. Click Back to exit the Development Mode screen.
  8. On the home screen of the device, to verify that the Development Mode was set, verify that the Development Mode icon is displayed at the top:

    The Development Mode icon.

To be able to develop for the tablet, you need to change to Development Mode. This mode allows you to remotely install and launch an application on your tablet. If you don't intend to do development activities, turn off Development Mode for increased security.

To disable Development Mode:

  1. Click the Setting icon.
  2. Select Security in the left navigator.
  3. Select Development Mode from the list of security options.
  4. Next to the Use Development Mode label, set the Development Mode setting to OFF.

Retrieve the IP address of the tablet or simulator

The Deployment Setup Wizard will autodetect your devices that are in Development Mode. However, in the event that it doesn't, you will need to provide the IP address to the wizard to deploy your application in the tablet or the simulator. To display the IP address, the device must be in Development Mode. You can view the IP address by clicking the Development Mode icon to the right of the clock on the status bar.

By default, Development Mode is set to ON for the simulator. Take note of the IP address for later use.
