What's New?

Built for BlackBerry signifies to customer that an app or game delivers the signature BlackBerry 10 experience

Built for BlackBerry is a designation that signifies to users that the app or game fully embraces and delivers the BlackBerry 10 platform experience of built to keep you moving. Apps and games with the Built for BlackBerry designation provide the seamless performance and integrated experience customers have come to love. In terms of the signature BlackBerry 10 experience, this is about apps and games bringing the BlackBerry 10 platform to life. In bringing BlackBerry 10 to life, vendors must follow the BlackBerry 10 guidelines to deliver a familiar experience to customers, i.e. swipe back to exit an app, swipe down for application menu with settings, swipe up for action menu, use of context menu, etc.

New Program Criteria:

The refreshed program criteria are designed to remove subjective aspects of the original evaluation criteria. We have created a checklist for apps and a checklist for games for the new criteria that specifically identifies how the Built for BlackBerry designation is achieved.

Fundamentally the program criteria are the same, with some key highlights on specific criteria below:

Platform Eligibility

Of note, consistent with the original program, apps and games must be developed using tools designed specifically for the BlackBerry 10 OS. These include Software Development Kits ("SDKs") or frameworks that will compile an application that runs as an AIR, Native or WebWorks™ based BlackBerry 10 application namely, BlackBerry 10 AIR SDK, BlackBerry 10 Native SDK, BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK. Additional frameworks such as PhoneGap and Appcelerator will be considered provided that they comply with the BlackBerry 10 UI guidelines and Program Criteria.

  • Excluded Apps - The following will not be accepted under this Program:
    • An app developed using a tool or template that automatically produces a significant portion of the features and functionality and that creates the same look and feel as apps previously submitted by a Vendor;
    • Ported Android apps; and,
    • An app that launches a web page (collectively, "Excluded Apps")

BlackBerry® reserves the right to determine in its sole discretion if an App is considered to be an Excluded App and such decisions shall be final and binding.

The Testing Plans corresponding to each of the app and game checklists' are available to vendors.

Submission Process Transition

Built for BlackBerry submissions will now occur via BlackBerry Jam Zone, transitioning from the current BlackBerry® World™ Vendor Portal. The transition to BlackBerry Jam Zone will occur on August 27th and vendors can access the submission process by:

  1. BlackBerry World Vendor Portal: there will be a link in the Vendor Portal directing to the BlackBerry Jam Zone submission portal
  2. BlackBerry Jam Zone: logging in to BlackBerry Jam Zone will provide a link to apply for Built for BlackBerry
  3. BlackBerry Developer Website: vendors can click on the homepage link to access the submission portal

Advantages to BlackBerry Jam Zone submission is automatic scanning for supported platform as well as instant feedback on the eligibility of the apps/games based on that criteria.

Throughout the Testing Process, any communications to you will provide a concise, holistic view of testing against the checklist so any updates required to the app to achieve the designation are clear and specific.

Opting-out of the program: Vendors have the option to withdraw individual Apps from the Program or to withdraw themselves from the Program entirely. To withdraw from the Program entirely, Vendors will need to send an email to BFBtestingteam@blackberry.com requesting withdrawal from the Program. To withdraw an individual App from the Program, Vendors must visit the Candidates, Approved, or Under Review pages of the Program Submission Portal and will need to follow the instructions to select the App(s) they wish to withdraw from the Program.
